- Create a Routine: Children with autism often thrive on predictability. A consistent daily schedule can reduce anxiety and help them know what to expect.
- Use Visuals: Pictures, visual schedules, or social stories can help explain tasks, expectations, and social situations more clearly.
- Encourage Communication: Whether it’s through words, gestures, pictures, or devices, celebrate every attempt your child makes to communicate. Be patient and give them time to respond.
- Understand Sensory Needs: Some children are sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, or smells. Try to create an environment that’s comfortable for them. Maybe they need a quiet corner, or perhaps they enjoy deep pressure.
- Celebrate Small Victories: Every new skill learned, every step forward, no matter how small, is a huge achievement. Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s efforts and progress.
- Self-Care for Parents: This journey can be demanding. Remember to take care of yourself too! A rested and supported parent can better support their child.
