Dr. Caesar is the visionary behind this website and series of books. He believes its existence is part of his reason for being: to shine a light in the dark places.
Dr. Larry Winston Caesar is originally from Trinidad and Tobago. He immigrated to the US in 1999. He has been a Pediatrician for 16 years, a husband for 19 years, and a father of 2 wonderful kids. As a physician of over close to 19 years and a practicing outpatient conventional pediatrician for close to 16 years, I believe I am qualified to speak on matters related to healthcare.
My training in integrative medicine, health coaching, and functional medicine, and my personal health and wellness struggles also lend me a unique perspective. More important than that is my faith in God.
My childhood dream was never to be a physician. As a child, I wanted to be an astronaut. I also dreamed of being an athlete. I was always getting into trouble as a child for opening up electronic equipment to see how it worked. When I applied to undergraduate college, I applied to become a computer science major. My earthly father influenced me to change my major to Premedical Biology. He apologized many years later. His excuse was that he wanted one of the kids to become a doctor. He encouraged me to pursue whatever it was that I wanted to do. By then I had been a pediatrician for several years and had a wife and 2 kids that were dependent on my steady income.
I can tell you that I was miserable as a physician. I felt trapped. My mental and physical health suffered. I became obese and developed hypertension and severe environmental allergies that required monthly allergy shots. I got through the workday by diving it into 2 halves. I told myself, “Just get to lunchtime!”. Once I got to lunchtime I then told myself, “Three more hours”. It was a miserable way to live 5 days a week.
This was compounded by my own formative poor self-esteemed cultured by a religious and authoritarian upbringing. Growing up I had never really learned to enjoy life. Because of all the energy that it took for me to do my job, especially as an introvert, I had no energy to do fun stuff. The weekend was simply time to recoup to do my 40 hours plus on the job again. The interesting thing is that even though I hated my job my patients loved me. Maybe they sensed my genuine concern for their welfare.
I am in a much better place now: spiritually, mentally and physically. I still have some struggles. For example, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2022. I am now cancer-free by the supernatural grace of God. I will likely write a book about this eventually. Getting back to the narrative at hand a CME course I took in the summer of 2016 changed my life forever. The course introduced me to concepts like letting food be my medicine, the pleasure trap, and plant-based nutrition. I was desperate so I decided to try veganism. Two months in, and twenty pounds lighter, I was weaned off my hypertension medications and the monthly allergy shots. I was quite disillusioned when on reflection it dawned on me that I had been trained to be a Medical drug pusher instead of a health and wellness facilitator or promoter.
Nine years later I am board-certified in Integrative medicine and have had training in functional medicine and health coaching. I am still working as an outpatient pediatrician in the same organization for the past 13 years. My practice is largely conventional and guided by my employer’s protocols. My passion, however, is to empower and inspire patients by providing them with the information they need to think, eat, and live for health. I created a website Teleduhealth.com a few years ago to help in this regard.
The word doctor comes from the Latin word “docere” which means teacher. Over the years I have written books that I have not published. I believe now is the right time to press forward. The books in this series contain curated information that I believe is relevant.
