Autism: Myths vs. Facts

There are many misconceptions about autism. Understanding the reality can help create a more accepting and supportive community for all.

MYTH: Autism is a mental illness caused by bad parenting. FACT: Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference. This means the brain is wired differently from birth. It is not caused by how a child is raised.

MYTH: All people with autism are the same. FACT: The phrase “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism” is a great way to remember that it’s a spectrum. Every individual has a unique combination of strengths and challenges.

MYTH: People with autism don’t want to have friends or relationships. FACT: Most autistic people desire social connection. They may struggle with social skills or communicating in typical ways, but they are capable of forming deep, meaningful relationships.

MYTH: People with autism can’t live independent lives. FACT: Many autistic individuals lead full, independent lives. With the right support and accommodations, they can thrive in school, work, and their communities.
