Visual Supports That Work

Pictures That Speak: How Visuals Help Communication

For a non-verbal person, a picture can be their voice. Visual supports are simply images—from drawings to photos on a tablet—that represent words, helping them express their wants, needs, and feelings.

Why do they work so well?

Spoken words disappear the moment they’re said. A picture stays put. This gives the person time to process information and decide what they want to say without pressure, which dramatically reduces frustration.

Examples of common visual tools:

  • Choice Boards: Lets someone point to a picture of what they want, like a snack or a toy.
  • Visual Schedules: A strip of pictures showing what’s happening next (like “First breakfast, then get dressed”). This makes the day predictable and less anxious.
  • Communication Apps: Tablet apps where tapping a symbol (like “I’m hungry” or “all done”) makes the device speak the phrase aloud.

In short, these tools provide a clear and stress-free way to communicate, giving a voice to those who need one and fostering independence.
