Building Your Support Team

Navigating the world of autism care can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Building a strong and comprehensive support team is the key to ensuring your child has everything they need to thrive.

The journey often begins with your pediatrician, who is your first point of contact and primary medical manager. They can help you understand the diagnosis and provide referrals to specialists. They can also help you with important forms for things like FMLA and disability parking placards, which can be lifesavers for managing schedules and keeping your child safe.

From there, you’ll connect with therapists who are vital for your child’s development. This may include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapists to help with skill development, speech-language pathologists to improve communication, and occupational therapists to address sensory needs and motor skills.

Your pediatrician might also recommend other specialists, like a developmental pediatrician for ongoing guidance or a neurologist for specific medical concerns.

As your child gets older, their special education teacher will become a critical ally, working with you to create an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to ensure they get the right support in school.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, connect with other autistic parents. They understand your journey like no one else. Sharing experiences and advice with people who “get it” can provide incredible emotional support and a sense of community.

Building this team takes time, but each person you add strengthens the circle of support around your child. Remember, you are at the center of this team, guiding the process and advocating for your child every step of the way.
