Recognizing Signs of Burnout

Burnout is more than just a bad day or feeling tired; it’s a state of deep, prolonged emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. For caregivers, it often creeps in silently, disguised as the new normal. Recognizing the signs is the first, most crucial step.

You might notice it emotionally, as a constant feeling of being overwhelmed, a shorter temper, or a sense of detachment from things you used to enjoy. Physically, it can manifest as persistent fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix, changes in your appetite or sleep patterns, or more frequent headaches and illnesses. Mentally, burnout can feel like “brain fog”—difficulty concentrating, a lack of motivation, and a growing sense of cynicism or hopelessness. Noticing these signals isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a critical act of self-awareness.
