Supporting Neurotypical Siblings

Supporting Siblings: Making Sure Every Child Feels Seen

In a family focused on the unique needs of an autistic child, it’s common for their neurotypical siblings to sometimes feel a bit invisible. Intentionally creating moments of connection and understanding is key to ensuring they feel just as valued and supported. Here are three simple strategies to help.

  • Carve Out Special 1:1 Time Your undivided attention is a powerful gift. Set aside dedicated one-on-one time with your neurotypical child, even if it’s just for ten minutes. This focused time, free from distractions, reinforces their individual importance and strengthens your bond.
  • Create a Safe Space for Questions Encourage your child to ask any and all questions they have about autism. Answering openly fosters understanding and empathy, reduces confusion or resentment, and equips them to be confident advocates for their sibling and navigate your family’s unique dynamics.
  • Promote Inclusive Play Be intentional about finding activities that both of your children can enjoy together. Introducing sensory-friendly games or adapting existing activities can bridge developmental gaps, reduce frustration, and build a foundation of positive, shared experiences.
