“You have done the incredible work of learning and preparing. Now, it’s time to turn that knowledge into action. Real change begins with the very next step you take. Here is your to-do list to get started.
First, and most importantly, it’s time to make it official. The single most powerful thing you can do to start the process is to request an evaluation for your child in writing. An email or a formal letter creates a paper trail and starts a legal timeline that the school must follow. We have provided a template for you, so you don’t have to worry about what to say. Just fill it in and press send. This is your official first move.
Second, I want you to find your people. This journey can feel lonely, but you are not alone. There is a whole community of parents out there who understand exactly what you’re going through. Find a local or online special education parent group. This will be your source of support, advice, and your best cheerleaders. Don’t do this by yourself.
And finally, equip yourself with the right words. When you’re in an IEP meeting, knowing what to say and how to say it is critical. We’ve created a phrasebook full of the exact language to use when describing your child’s strengths and needs. It will help you sound confident and ensure the goals written into the IEP are strong and specific.
So, your homework is simple: Send the letter, find your group, and download your tools. You’re not just a parent anymore. You are a confident, prepared advocate, and you are ready.
